Following the success of his solo debut Eye of the Storm (2024), the award-winning Belgian pianist Bas Bulteel returns with his second solo album: Improvised Textures. Never one to shy away from experiment, Bas now takes it one step further, committing fully to free improvisation. The recordings took place in the summer of 2023, immediately following the recording sessions for his previous album. In that lingering headspace, Bas found a total artistic liberation. No rules. No judgement. Across a series of "improvised textures", he weaves together threads of jazz and classical influences, minimalism and the avant-garde. It is a powerful, intimate collection of miniatures that captures a musician finding himself by starting over—again and again—drawing the listener into an unfiltered moment of creation. Fun fact: The seventeenth track is titled La petite crevette (The little shrimp). With a wink, it alludes to Bas’s own role in the bigger picture (and to the North Sea, which is never far away).
