1984 is a new trio formed by Sakina Abdou (saxophones), Mariam Rezaei (turntables) and Kobe Van Cauwenberghe (guitar). As all three musicians share the same year of birth, they see the eponymous Orwellian fictional counterpart as quite reflective of our times; however, they aim to translate it into gorgeously beautiful, noisy, utopian, complex, dreamlike experimental music.
And that is exactly what this challenging trio do on their highly anticipated debut album, The Forward Process, for Dropa Disc. Inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin’s sci-fi classic The Dispossessed, and drawing on Henry Threadgill’s timeless post-tonal intervallic system to open further spaces for improvisation, 1984 provide an extraordinary sonic ride, captured beautifully in a three-day recording session at Antwerp’s Dropa House Studio at the end of 2025.
