For about ten years, Steiger has been casting itself as one of the most idiosyncratic
bands on the Belgian jazz-and-crossover scene. Together, keyboardist Gilles
Vandecaveye-Pinoy (Peenoise, Ruben Block, Uma Chine...) bassist Kobe Boon (mòs
ensemble, The Milk Factory, Kreis...) and drummer Simon Raman (Ivy Falls, Uma
Chine, mòs ensemble...) released three albums and an EP, which received rave
reviews from the press at home and abroad. In 2017, they won the Young Jazz Talent
competition at Gent Jazz. Over the years, they have also been artist-in-residence at
Vooruit Arts Center, VOLTA. and DeSingel.
After a few years in the lee, during which the musicians focused on other projects,
the trio reunited with great enthusiasm for a fourth full album, to be released in
October 2025.
Ceci n'est pas du jazz.
For their 2nd full album they worked around space and acoustics (Give Space,
2017), their next album (The New Lady Llama, 2021) and EP (Brick Smoke
Basement, 2021) was more of a symbiosis between electronica and acoustic music.
Their latest album, Mowglowski's first take, brings all their experiences and
experiments together in a fresh and organic way. The joy of playing and the sense of
making music together is very much audible on their new album. In collaboration with
producer Frederik Segers (Stadt, Fulco, De beren Gieren, Black Flower...) they came
up with a dynamic, idiosyncratic record that is very accessible. The music exudes a
joy of life, with a good dose of humor, but does not shy away from darkness either.
The lovely, controlled versus the wild and free.
Steiger embraces great contrasts, taking the listener into their unique musical
universe
