Elias Mulugeta is a visionary Ethiopian jazz musician and cultural curator whose work bridges traditional East African sounds with contemporary jazz expression. As founder of Jazbyssinia—one of Ethiopia’s most acclaimed Ethio Jazz ensembles—he has played a pivotal role in preserving and reimagining the country’s rich musical heritage. Since its founding in 2016, Jazbyssinia has become a cornerstone of the new Ethio Jazz generation, celebrated for its bold arrangements, deep-rooted authenticity, and international reach. With performances spanning Addis Ababa to Brussels, Elias blends soulful improvisation with historical depth, drawing inspiration from Ethio Jazz legends and modern innovators alike. His work has been featured in ethnographic research, international festivals, and archival projects that explore the intersection of music, identity, and memory. Currently based between Ethiopia and Belgium, Elias continues to compose original Ethio Jazz, curate cross-cultural experiences, and contribute to academic and artistic dialogues. His practice is rooted in legacy, driven by purpose, and shaped by a deep commitment to community and craft.
