Greetings is the debut full-length album by Jazbyssinia, released in 2021 and recorded live on the Jazzic stage—a televised music series broadcast on a local Ethiopian channel. Founded by visionary jazz musician Elias Mulugeta, the album marks a defining moment in the evolution of Ethio-jazz.
The album features two distinct musical categories: original compositions by the band and reimagined arrangements of well-known songs from both Ethiopia and the United States. Across ten tracks, Greetings showcases a soulful fusion of Ethiopian scales and rhythms, woven into bold, jazz-infused arrangements that reflect the band’s deep cultural roots and innovative spirit.
Recorded in Addis Ababa, the project brought together Elias and five accomplished local musicians, each contributing their unique artistry to the album’s rich sonic tapestry. The result is a vibrant and authentic celebration of Ethiopian musical heritage, interpreted through the lens of contemporary jazz.
Greetings received widespread acclaim within Ethiopia’s jazz community and beyond, earning praise for its originality, emotional depth, and cross-cultural resonance. Today, Jazbyssinia continues to expand its creative horizons, collaborating with European artists and elevating Ethio-jazz onto the global stage.
