don Marsh V is the acoustic jazz quintet led by pianist and composer Wouter Van den Broeck, presenting its second album IANUA. The title refers to the Latin word for “gate” as well as to Janus, the Roman god with two faces — an image that resonates with a central idea in Van den Broeck’s compositions: melodies that transform throughout a piece, as if passing through a gate into another musical dimension. Rather than undergoing drastic changes, the melodies interact with a new environment and slowly take on a different character. This focus on form and development remains in constant dialogue with the fundamental elements of jazz — swing, groove, and spontaneous interaction.
