Born in 1974, he studied jazz at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent.

A freelance guitarist, bandleader and co-leader since 1993, he has been involved in a myriad of projects spanning jazz, improvisation, pop, blues, Cuban music, folk, New Orleans, roots, soundscape, bebop, theatre music, classical music, gypsy jazz, avant-garde, tango and alternative rock.
He combines a profound knowledge of both classic and contemporary jazz traditions with a singular, authentic and subtly disruptive voice.

Over the years, he has shared stages and studios with an astonishing range of artists, including American jazz trumpeter Dave Douglas, Dré Pallemaerts, Bert Joris, classical double bassist Ben Faes, alternative art rock band dEUS, pop singer Axelle Red and her Nashville-based Stax soul band, the classical tango ensemble Orquesta Tanguedia, as well as Belgian icons such as Raymond van het Groenewoud, Lady Linn, Kommil Foo, Daan Stuyven...

His own projects - merging his broad background in jazz, improvisation and contemporary music - have resulted in several critically acclaimed albums.
With the De Groote–Faes Duo, his long-standing collaboration with double bassist Ben Faes, he has developed a unique musical universe unconstrained by genre. Their 2017 release Symphony for 2 Little Boys, featuring Dave Douglas, received enthusiastic reviews across Europe.

In 2026, the De Groote–Faes Duo releases  t i m e  u n f o l d i n g, featuring iconic Belgian drummer Dré Pallemaerts as a special guest.
