What Tania Giannouli makes are akin to sound sculptures. With an eye for finesse, she sculpts her music down to the finest details. At times it is stunningly melodious, although sounds on her recent album In Fading Light can sometimes chafe or clash too. The key thing is that every note is meaningful. At Walden the pianist performs with her regular oud player Kyriakos Tapakis. In Brussels-based trumpeter Jean-Paul Estiévenart she has found an occasional partner in crime. Just like Giannouli, he is not an artist of self-important virtuosity, but someone who subtly seeks out the essence of every flow of air he exhales. The combination of these three promises to be an exceptionally expressive event.
