As every year, Leuven Jazz presents a series of theme combos by the jazz department of the LUCA School of Arts. Together with their teachers, the students develop a repertoire based on a specific theme or notable figure from the history of jazz.
Saxophone teacher Frank Vaganée and his students introduce you to the Quintet and Sextet repertoire of American jazz saxophonist Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley (1928–1975).
Adderley was one of the most expressive saxophonists of his time. He performed alongside Miles Davis on the legendary album Kind of Blue (1959), before striking out in a new direction with his own Quintet, later expanded to a Sextet. With hits such as This Here and Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, he brought an irresistible mix of hard bop, blues and funk, becoming a pioneer of soul jazz. Energy, groove and the pure joy of playing: that's Cannonball at his best.
with Tim Van de Bogaert (saxophone), Hannah Bruylandt (vocals), Bruno Peers (piano), William Lambert (piano), Hans Ramaekers (guitar), Roman D'hondt (bass) and Simon Alexandre (drums)
