Among the great ladies of vocal jazz (Billie, Ella, Sarah, etc.), Nina Simone (1933–2003) holds a unique place. From jazz to soul, through blues, R’n’B, protest songs, and covers of French chansons, Nina charted the musical history of the second half of the 20th century—musically, but also politically. Scarred by racism from childhood, she became, at the turn of the 1960s, one of the icons of the African American civil rights movement. A painful life whose key moments are depicted in images by the House of Jazz.
