In their relatively short career, Kae Tempest has already picked up two nominations for the Mercury Prize Britain's leading music award. As many as Oasis, The xx and alt-J. Okay, in an ideal world, they would have cashed in on those nominations too, but admit it, that's not bad for a quirky rapper from a London suburb who spends half her time doing literature, theatre Guy Cassiers based his play Tiresias on one of their lyrics and poetry. It will therefore not surprise anyone that Tempest brings a mix of hip-hop and spoken word, but what should be surprising is that they even influenced Jay-Z with it. After their (super) producer Rick Rubin played some demos of her latest album The Book of Traps and Lessons to the rapper, he suddenly said: "Okay, I'm going home. I know what I need to do now." A few months later, Jay-Z released 4:44, by far his best and most introspective record in years. That's the effect Kae Tempest has on people. And demigods. Add to that their brand new album The Line is A Curve and with Kae's characteristic lyrics and powerful performance, their arrival at Gent Jazz is already one for the history books.
