Interlinie brings together musicians from the worlds of improvisation and experimental music in an adventurous programme that tours various venues across Belgium and the Netherlands. By fostering encounters between diverse musical practices, Interlinie aims to stimulate new artistic work and build lasting collaborations.

In 2026, Rataplan, Space is the Place and Sound in Motion are organising an evening featuring a double bill: the trio Mother Tongue and As Yet Untitled by Bex Burch, together with Esther Coorevits, Stan Maris and James McClure. The As Yet Untitled project is the result of an international residency by the Berlin-based percussionist, composer and instrument maker Bex Burch.

As Yet Untitled

During her residency for Interlinie #3, Bex Burch is working on her composition As Yet Untitled. Joining her are trumpeter James McClure (NL/ZA), violinist Esther Coorevits (BE, former Artist in Residence at Rataplan) and accordionist Stan Maris (BE, Kin Gajo). Together, they give shape to Bex’s work through their own musical practices, creating unique musical encounters that extend beyond a single moment or place.

As Yet Untitled lies somewhere between structure and improvisation, repetition and disruption. The work unfolds in a dialogue between sounds of nature, instruments and voices from the audience. Burch explores the boundaries of her music by embracing unpredictability and a strong spirit of collaboration, resulting in a rich sonic texture. It is music that brings people together. The performance thus becomes a shared experience, in which music and collectivity seek to lift all those present to a place of connection.

Mother Tongue

Mother Tongue is the collaboration between drummer Frank Rosaly, griot singer Mola Sylla, and improvisational keyboardist Oscar Jan Hoogland. Each brings a unique instrument and their own cultural background, giving their collective music a distinctive and idiosyncratic sound.

Singer and percussionist Mola Sylla is, in many ways, a musical explorer. Born and raised in Dakar, Senegal, he grew up within the tradition of the griots — poets and bards who pass on stories, often interwoven with theatre and dance. That rich tradition of musical storytelling still forms the core of Sylla’s sound.

The Puerto Rican drummer Frank Rosaly has been active on the improvised and experimental music scene since 2001. He made a name for himself in Chicago, a city with a vibrant culture of improvisation, rock and jazz, where he became a musical icon. He now lives in Amsterdam, where he also plays a key musical role in the improvisation scene. He has already performed with various projects at Rataplan, including Mestixz.

Oscar Jan Hoogland embodies the vibrancy of his home city, Amsterdam. As an instant composer and instrument inventor, he plays, amongst other things, a clavichord – a 17th-century keyboard instrument – which he connects to a 220-volt power supply. As the last pupil of pianist, composer and improviser Misha Mengelberg, he sweeps through the Amsterdam jazz and improvisation scene like a tornado.

Interlinie is a collaboration between Space is the Place, Sound In Motion, HAconcerts, Kaap, Werkplaats Walter, Bimhuis, POM and Rataplan. With support from Green Pilot Tour (European Jazz Network).
