Gondwana Night ft. Svaneborg Kardyb, Jack Wyllie presents Paradise Cinema & Kessoncoda

Gondwana Records

For refreshing jazz, we’re not looking to London this year, but to the renowned and innovative Manchester-based Gondwana Records, founded by trumpeter and flagbearer Matthew Halsall.

A trumpeter, composer and producer in his own right, Halsall has released a handful of beautiful, atmospheric albums on the label, as well as launching (young) talents such as GoGo Penguin, Portico Quartet, Mammal Hands, Hania Rani and our favs Vega Trails. It also hosted our young Belgian heroes STUFF. The great thing is that the label often starts with jazz, but also opens up the genre to minimalism, electronica and even classical music.

For Leuven Jazz, the label descends on our Schouwburg with punishing, fresh and discoverable acts. This Saturday evening, you will experience three innovative sets up close, on stage and in the foyer. On Sunday, you also get one of the most promising voices on the label with Caoilfhionn Rose.

Kessoncoda – Belgian debut

Kessoncoda is the duo of drummer Tom Sunney and keyboardist Filip Sowa. Standing firm between acoustic tradition and electronica, they are founded on a unique blend of melodic ostinato-laced piano and unwavering drums.

Drawing on their array of musical interests, Filip and Tom take influence from rock, electronica, ambient, breakbeat, film soundtracks and artists such as Squarepusher, Radiohead and Clark all hot-housed in their unique studio set-up, a shed at the bottom of Tom’s garden. From the shed to our main stage, it’s just a small step!

Jack Wyllie presents Paradise Cinema – Belgian debut

Paradise Cinema is a musical project from multi-instrumentalist Jack Wyllie (Portico Quartet/Szun Waves), originally inspired by Wyllie’s time living in Senegal. Paradise Cinema’s latest album returning, dream contains nods to Jon Hassell, Terry Riley, Don Cherry and Midori Takada, as well as more contemporary electronic, ambient and non-western music.

Svaneborg Kardyb

A happy reunion with the two gentlemen of Svaneborg Kardyb. At Leuven Jazz 2022, they made their European debut with their first concert outside their native Denmark. They have since won every jazz award there is to be won in their home country.

With their infectious minimalist Nordic jazz approach, they create beautiful dreamy sounds with a focus on atmosphere and feeling. A beautifully layered mix of Danish folk, moody jazz, subtle electronics and fine grooves.

Their third album Over Tage, their first on Gondwana Records, opened doors abroad. Now, they present their latest album Superkilen. You can still recognise their typical languid sound. Yet the songs also gain extra momentum and you hear the growth they are experiencing as artists.
