A graduate of the classical music academy, Stephen Armbruster turned to jazz at an early age, finding in it a form of expression that resonated more deeply with his musical sensibilities. A passionate trumpeter, he has developed a particular affection for the roots of traditional jazz, the New Orleans style, and the spirit of American brass bands.

Throughout his career, Stephen has performed with numerous jazz ensembles and brass sections, while taking part in a wide variety of musical projects ranging from piano bars to large orchestral productions. He has shared the stage with renowned musicians such as Antoine Colin, Loïc Dumoulin, Laurent Hendrick, Alexandre Plumacker, Pierre Malempré, Hinderik Leeuwe, and Luc Vandenbosch. He has also accompanied artists including Marka, Pascal Michaux, and Renaud Patigny, as well as international performers such as Rhoda Scott, Maxine Brown, and BB Washington.

As the founder and musical director of James Gang – Trad'Jazz, Stephen is now the driving force behind several projects dedicated to preserving and promoting the heritage of traditional jazz. Through concepts such as "Jazz and Heart" and "Louis & Papa Joe", he aims to share far more than music alone: a story, an emotion, and a living cultural legacy.

In 2026, a journey to New Orleans profoundly influenced his musical path. Through encounters, jam sessions, and live performances, he experienced firsthand the spirit that continues to animate the birthplace of jazz. This immersion notably led him to perform at the legendary Preservation Hall alongside trumpeter Wendell Brunious, one of the most respected ambassadors of traditional New Orleans jazz.

For Stephen, jazz is above all a music of sharing. A music that brings people together, tells stories, offers comfort when needed, and continues to make hearts beat in unison—from New Orleans to Belgium.
