Ernst Vranckx, born in Leuven on 3 April 1966, began his musical career in the late 1980s. In 1994, he won the Nicolas Dor Prize alongside the flautist Stefan Bracaval. Together, they recorded the album *Aquarelle*.
He then went on to work with the Chris Joris Experience, where he was partly responsible for composition and arrangement. Their album *Live* was a great success.
Ernst Vranckx’s music is described as ‘European cool’ with ethnic and classical influences. This blend has also resonated far beyond national borders. As a result, his song “The Miner’s Tale” was covered in the United States and Canada (David Lewis, CFMU).
He went on to collaborate with the trumpeter Kenny Wheeler. This resulted in the album *A Child’s Blessing* for WERF. The same label released his quintet album *Songs & Dances*.
Over the years, Ernst Vranckx has given concerts, taken part in festivals and appeared on radio and television programmes throughout Europe, in South Africa and in China.
In recent years, he has worked with the German producer Ralf Kemper (Alan Broadbent, Arturo Sandoval, Jimmy Scott, etc.). For his label, Eden River Records, he recorded *Things as they Are* with double bassist Paul G. Ulrich and drummer Kris Duerinckx. A project with New Zealand saxophonist Hayden Chisholm will follow in 2022. Accompanied by double bassist David Helm and Kris Duerinckx on drums, he will then release “Black is the Colour”.
