jazzathome: Ramon Van Merckenstein

The Ramon van Merkenstein Trio, rooted in the cultural vibrancy of Brussels, is a modern jazz ensemble led by the Dutch bassist Ramon van Merkenstein. Formed in 2019, the trio blends diverse influences: Italian guitarist Gabriele di Franco, a rising star on the European jazz scene; Belgian drummer Lieven Venken, an established figure with nearly two decades’ experience on the New York scene; and bassist and composer Ramon van Merkenstein, whose melodic and dynamic approach shapes the group’s sound.

Their 2021 debut album, *Quiet Dreams*, was recorded with support from the ‘ça Balance’ programme (Province of Liège) and released on Homerecords. The album was met with critical acclaim and was followed by an extensive tour of over 30 concerts. This journey strengthened their musical bond and forged an ensemble that thrives on spontaneity, ensemble playing and collective storytelling. Their performances go beyond virtuosity and draw the audience into compelling musical dialogues.

In 2024, they released *Waiting for a Summer Storm* on Challenge Records (NL), once again to acclaim in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. What sets the trio apart is their commitment to interaction and spontaneity, creating live experiences that break with tradition and invite the audience into a constantly evolving musical narrative.

Following two critically acclaimed albums — *Quiet Dreams* (2021) and *Waiting for a Summer Storm* (2024, Challenge Records) — the trio has built a strong reputation through energetic live performances in Belgium and beyond.

The band is currently working on new material that further expands their musical universe and paves the way for a third album.
