Projection film 'Just Friends' (1992)

Antwerp, 1959.

Jack is a highly talented tenor saxophonist. Despite his fame, he has to work on the docks to make ends meet. His dream is to go to New York, the Mecca of jazz, to measure himself against his masters, the great Black American musicians. But that dream requires money.

Jack’s band, the Bop Friends, perform in dreary tea rooms or as part of Mickey Bunner’s big band. André, Jack’s sculptor friend, whose avant-garde experiments earn him the ridicule of his neighbours and the scorn of the academic world, meets Lucy and sets out to win her over. But it is Jack she has already fallen for. Love blossoms between Jack and Lucy, but Jack has only one thought, one desire, always the same and always unfulfilled: to head to New York, with its music scene and legendary musicians. Where can he find the dollars he so desperately lacks?
