Love and beauty defy time, gender and paradoxes. Sister of Nadia, one of the greatest music teachers of the 20th century, ‘Lili’ Boulanger wrote music of fascinating inner power during her short time on earth (1893-1918). That Tom Bourgeois encountered her a century later is not so surprising, after all: in his album Murmures (2018), the saxophonist had already worked on the work of Maurice Ravel. Lili Boulanger, for her part, learned piano with Gabriel Fauré. We therefore remain in the same impressionist musical universe, whose influence has not waned over time.
Proof of this is that the entire ‘Lili’ project, both the album and the concert, is dedicated to the musician with a tragic destiny. At the crossroads of jazz, impressionist and contemporary music, ‘Lili’ radiates freedom and intelligence. No stranger to film music, Tom Bourgeois reveals this fascinating, often mystical universe, burning with an unquenchable inner fire. Disturbing, by force... Chamber jazz? There's room for everyone.
