Founded by jazz guitarist Matteo Di Leonardo, who has been based in Brussels since 2015, Echo Woods embodies an innovative musical quest where jazz tradition meets contemporary experimentation. This unique project, driven by original compositions, pushes sonic boundaries to offer an immersive and captivating experience.
Recorded in June 2024, their new album—set for release on March 28, 2025, under the Belgian label Hans Kusters Music—reflects Di Leonardo’s bold artistic vision. The tracks explore new sonic landscapes, blending sharp melodies and warm harmonies in a subtle and nuanced instrumental dialogue.
The group stands out through its singular instrumentation. Surrounding a classic jazz trio—electric guitar, double bass, and drums—is an atypical wind section composed of bass clarinet, saxophones, bassoon, and the sheng, a traditional Chinese wind instrument. This exceptional combination creates rich textures, striking contrasts, and a deeply original sonic identity.
Echo Woods’ compositions draw inspiration from traditional jazz, contemporary avant-garde, chamber music, and ethnic sounds.
