The Free Desmyter - Bassem Hawar Group is set up as the fusion of two trios. One consists of three Flemish classics of (world) jazz: pianist and composer Free Desmyter, double bassist Nathan Wouters and drummer and percussionist Chris Joris. The other gathers three Eastern masters: Iraqi djoze player and composer Bassem Hawar, Syrian oud player Tarek Alsayed and his compatriot singer and percussionist Khaled Alhafed. Both Alsayed and Alhafed come from the Syrian civil war-ravaged city of Aleppo.
Desmyter and Hawar's collaboration dates back to 2007, when they successfully toured Western Europe with their group AHOAR. That same year, they won the Creole German World Music Award. In 2000, Hawar was awarded the WDR Jazz Prize.
The connection and harmonious collaboration between East and West is central to Desmyter and Hawar's oeuvre. With this artistic project, they want to make a powerful peace statement today, in a time of geopolitical and human tensions.
