What is a Krewe?
A "krewe" in New Orleans is a social organization that organizes parades and dances during Carnival season, especially Mardi Gras. Each krewe has its own traditions, themes, and sometimes secret rituals. There are hundreds of them.
Belgian-New Orleans Jazz Funk
The unique aspect of Belgian Krewe is the "Gumbo" (the blend) of this music, which combines traditional and funk elements with Belgian folklore. A second line might, for example, transform into "Ça plane pour moi", or the musicians might break into "Chef un p'tit verre, on a soif" during a break.
A Tribute to Second Lines
This form of jazz has its roots in the typical New Orleans processions, which blend the rhythms of military marches with the free-flowing style of soloists. Joyful, improvised sounds, a gentle madness that makes you want to dance. And total freedom of movement for the musicians, who can wander around or settle down in a particular spot depending on the atmosphere and the audience's requests.
7 Trips to New Orleans
Formed after a trip to New Orleans, also known as the birthplace of Jazz (Louisiana, USA), Krewe du Belge brings together musicians inspired by this city and its unique, positive, and inclusive approach to cultural creation. Many of our musicians have traveled to New Orleans to immerse themselves in this music. This includes our Captain, Vanessa Tanghe, who has been there 7 times...
Exceptional Belgian Musicians
Behind the masks are exceptional musicians, including some jazz stars (see below for introductions). Krewe du Belge's primary goal is to promote high-quality live music. It's also a flexible brass band, comprising between 8 and 30 artists from all corners of Belgium.
Women Take Center Stage
The captain of Krewe du Belge is a woman, and we encourage female representation on the music scene. We've even written a song about it: "Women"!
3 Studio Albums
Since its inception, Krewe du Belge has recorded three albums. Our label is Step By Records.
Technical Specifications
Good news: technically, Krewe du Belge is 100% self-sufficient. The instruments are acoustic, and a mobile sound system amplifies the vocals. The result is surprising because few brass bands are capable of playing, singing, and telling stories while on the move.
