Leafcutter John and Bex Burch, two of the most interesting voices of the jazz+ scene, started this collaboration as a series of improvisation sessions via Zoom. The meeting of minimalist percussion and exuberant synthesizers grew into a beautiful, alienating and, above all, exciting ode to creative freedom.
Bex Burch is a composer, percussionist and gyil player. She spent three years with the Dagaare people in Northern Ghana where she learned to play the gyil, a balafon-like instrument typical for the region. Back in London, she built her own version with fourteen notes and a distinctive sound that has been central to her music ever since.
Leafcutter John, one of the most fearless and inventive electronicists (Time Out London), creates sound sculptures through visual programming or synthesizers.
The extraordinary confrontation between Bex Burch's traditional African percussion and Leafcutter John's electronic bag of tricks may seem strange but makes for a delightfully confusing result.
