  • Instruments : Drums
  • Date of birth : 22/06/1964 - France
Born in Britanny in 1964, Renaud Person started piano lessons aged 5, before falling in love with jazz music and drumset – an instrument that he started to learn as a self-taught when he was 12. While playing in local bands during the 80's, he studied musicology (Université de Provence), then classical percussion (Montpellier and Bruxelles Conservatories). Following a jazz summerclass in Belgium as he was a classical percussion student during the early 90's, he finally decided to fully dedicate himself to his childhood passion. He obtained a jazz drumset First Prize at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles in 1995. Later, he attended piano lessons with Nathalie Loriers (Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel), and composition/arrangement classes with Kris Defoort (idem). He also studied piano with Ron van Rossum (Lemmens Instituut). During the 90's he attended to various international jazz summerclasses directed by some of the contemporary American masters (Jack DeJohnette, Paul Motian, Joe Lovano, Dave Holland, John Abercrombie, Marc Johnson, Lee Konitz, Enrico Pieranunzi, Bill Frisell, ...).

In the classical field, he has worked as a percussionist within the following orchestras :

• The Orquesta Sinfonica del Vallès (Barcelona, Spain)
• The Ensemble Orchestral Perpignan Languedoc Roussillon (France)
• Champ d'Action (Belgium)

In the jazz and non-classical fields, here is part of his past experience :

- Un Poco Loco (Pierre Vaiana, 1994)
- Jazzpirine (Phil Abraham/Richard Rousselet, 1994-95)
- Aquarelle (Stephan Bracaval- Ernst Vranckx, 1997)
- Alchimie (CD en 2001, label Igloo)
- His own quintet Renaud 5 (2003-2005)

In addition, he has played with many big names of Belgian jazz – among others : Steve Houben, Paolo Radoni, Fabrice Alleman, Antoine Prawerman, Frank Vaganée, Robin Verheyen, Laurent Blondiau, Ewout Pierreux, Gregory Houben, Michel Paré, Daniel Stokart, Toine Thys, Kurt Van Herck, Philip Aerts, Bart Van Caenegem...

Among his current projects :

- The trio F, B and I (Nicola Andrioli, Hendrik Vanattenhoven)
- The octet Afrodisax (Marc Mangen)
- The quintet Al - Orkesta (Joe Higham)
- TAJ (Pop/chanson)

In constant search for artistical quality, for new ways to deepen his playing and experience, and for new artistic experiments and collaborations which may lead to stimulating and creative projects, are the mainstays he is currently relying on to develop the way he has chosen.
