Jazz&mo' #36 - RUIMTE

Jazz&mo’ #36 explores space in jazz and jazz in space. We head into the church and hop on the tram; we listen to jazz underwater, in the studio and in the open air. We look for a rehearsal space and we fly to the moon. You couldn’t imagine anything more spacious.

On the cover: sound artist Pak Yan Lau creates her own world of sound both above and below the water. Adia Vanheerentals and Tobias Volckaert gave a concert on Antwerp’s Tram 10. After moving five times, the Jazzzolder settled in 2024 in the monumental Predikherenkerk in Mechelen. Maarten Weyler argues for a safe place for jazz. Stefaan De Winter looks ahead to the reaffirming edition of Jazz in ’t Park. Klara’s twenties (de Twintigers) popped into Studio Toots. Evert Van den Broeck launched Room for Improvement, a platform for music students looking for rehearsal space. And Geert Clarisse draws jazz in space.

And furthermore: Rob Visser, owner of the Gold Listening Bar in Ghent, gives us a glimpse into his extensive record collection. Bart Vandevijvere is the new cover artist. Patrick Auwelaert reviewed Sun Ra’s Space is the Place for us. Jutta Hipp is not only the First Lady of European Jazz but also the jazz poet of the moment. Sitar player Nicolas Mortelmans presents his album Space. Leon Lhoëst teaches us all about comping. We spotlight the reviewers’ top five. Nagløed drew inspiration from Buddhism for Everything Is In Everything Else. And anyone who deciphers the anagrams stands a chance of winning tickets for Gent Jazz.
