Participate in Jazz Camp for Girls
Would you like to explore free music and improvisation in a playful atmosphere? Are you eager to make new friends and create music together? Jazz Camp for Girls is an inclusive summer camp for girls aged 12-16 who either play an instrument or are interested in discovering one. It's a collective journey to explore our musical voices. Professional coaches (including Louise van den Heuvel, Anke Verslype & Hanne De Backer) will guide you into the world of free play, improvisation, jazz, creation, and listening. Jazz Camp for Girls is being organized for the first time in Belgium this year, from August 26th to Thursday, August 29th, initiated by Ha Concerts, Muziekmozaïek, and Ledebirds.
Why the focus on girls?
The concept of Jazz Camp for Girls originated from Denmark, where they have been introducing young girls to jazz and its instruments for ten years. The aim is to create a more balanced gender representation in the music industry. With this camp, we aim to provide an open and safe environment with female role models, inspiring more girls to take the stage. The entire concept has been shaped from the start by a core group of young female musicians: Anthe Huybrechts, Janne Heylen, Nele Uyttendaele, Bárbara Jarque, and Oya Bakiroglu.
For whom: Girls between 12 and 16 years old who play an instrument or want to discover one (birth years 2012 to 2008)
When: Monday, August 26th to Thursday, August 29th, 2024, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, with a small performance on Thursday at 5:00 pm
Where: Ha Concerts, Kouter 29, 9000 Ghent
Registration: You can register until Friday, June 14th. You will hear from us by June 20th if you can participate. Selection is only necessary if the group becomes too large (maximum 18 people). The core group will then make a selection aiming for a balanced mix of instruments.
Price: We apply a solidarity pricing policy to make the summer camp accessible to everyone. You can choose the rate according to your means: base rate €80, plus rate €95, and reduced rate €60. We are affiliated with UiTPAS Ghent, allowing participation at the reduced rate (€16). Accident insurance is included in the participation fee. Participants are required to bring their own packed lunch.
Jazz Camp for Girls is an initiative of Ha Concerts, Muziekmozaïek & Ledebirds with the support of the City of Ghent and JazzDanmark. This is a UiTPAS activity (Ghent region).
