Dave Rempis and Nicolas Chkifi met during a week-long residency organised by Sound In Motion in Antwerp in April 2023, during which Spectral – the long-standing American brass trio comprising Larry Ochs, Darren Johnston and Rempis – joined forces with the brilliant European trio of Marta Warelis, Hugo Antunes and Nicolas Chkifi. Following this fruitful collaboration, Rempis and Chkifi decided to delve deeper into their shared interests and musical languages by forming a new duo to explore their mutual passion for West African music and improvisation.

Their debut album, entitled ‘Aula’, was released in January 2025 on Aerophonic Records.

Dave Rempis is one of the most renowned saxophonists on the Chicago and American improvised music scenes, known for his numerous groups such as the Rempis Percussion Quartet, Ballister and Kuzu. He combines a powerful sound, phenomenal technique and a contagious joy of performing.
