Belgian pianist and composer Alex Koo is known as a musical trailblazer with an insatiable curiosity. His work defies easy categorisation into a single style: from intimate jazz to electronic experiments, he is constantly exploring new sonic worlds. His playing has been compared to that of Keith Jarrett, amongst others, due to his technical freedom and expressive depth.
The album *Kimono Garden* grew out of Alex’s interest in electronic music. He describes the album as ‘a sort of runaway project’ that he created during lockdown as a personal solo experiment, recorded and mixed entirely by himself. Now this intriguing work is being given a new lease of life on stage, with a brand-new line-up.
For this live project, Alex has surrounded himself with strong voices from the Belgian music scene: Lorena Del Mar (Entre-Deux), Andrew Claes (STUFF.) and Trui Amerlinck (Tsar B, NABOU). Together, they transform the original minimalist album into a rich, layered whole in which jazz, neo-soul, ambient and electronica blend seamlessly.
Expect a captivating live experience full of groove, improvisation and timbre, with influences ranging from Hiatus Kaiyote to Erykah Badu and Thom Yorke. Kimono Garden thus evolves from an introspective solo album into an adventurous, cinematic sound that effortlessly transcends the traditional jazz stage.
