'The piano becomes the speaker for my monitor.'

Catharina is an experimental pianist seeking an alternative sonic palette for the acoustic piano. She achieves this, amongst other things, by manipulating acoustic sounds live via electronics, amplifying them and allowing them to resonate throughout the entire piano (soundboard, soundbox, strings). This creates a unique sonic universe, the various musical possibilities of which she explores through improvisation and composition.

Catharina also hopes to incorporate movement more strongly into her performance. The piano is a very static instrument, both physically and symbolically. As one of the most traditional choices for a learning instrument in classical music, Catharina aims to challenge this status through her electronic interventions, but also through movement. During her residency, Catharina will explore how she can transform the piano into a more fluid object through scenography or textiles.
