‘Between Bach and Jazz’
This music consists mainly of chamber music composed for electric guitar, trumpet and flugelhorn. In ‘Veil and Quintessence’, Gado plays duets with trumpeter Laurent Blondiau, whose introspective sound and style are sometimes reminiscent of Kenny Wheeler. The duo explores highly complementary ideas. The link between modal and vertical aspects often serves as a springboard for improvisational inspiration, somewhat similar to the ‘controlled freedom’ that Miles Davis employed in his quintet in the 1960s. This allows them to transcend this abstract, contemporary environment, which is already free of fixed structures or notation, and return to essential knowledge, which also applies to jazz, but which culminated in Bach's music for choir and basso continuo, and in the ‘cantus firmus’ of Gregorian chant.
The result is both soothing and stimulating.
