Tutu Puoane is one of the most charismatic voices working today. She spent about a decade carrying around a special anthology of poetry: In a Ribbon of Rhythm by her South African countrywoman Lebogang Mashile. The poems made a deep impression and sounded like music to Puoane’s ears. Pianist Ewout Pierreux - her partner in life and music - transformed some favourites from Mashile’s collection into a series of songs. The result is somewhere between singer-songwriting, jazz and soul, and formed the basis for Puoane’s new album Wrapped in Rhythm. She now performs it live with her band and special guest Bert Joris. The freewheeling songs leave plenty of room for the game of improvisation and communication that makes every Tutu Puoane concert such a joy.
